Juan
Juan - Self Portrait
Once upon a time …
From the moment he was seven, Juan’s life was forever intertwined with the magic of the lens. It all began on a warm, sunlit afternoon when his father and grandfather introduced him to his very first camera. That early lesson ignited a passion for photography and film—a spark that has grown into a blazing, lifelong affair with the art of capturing moments.
In his teenage years, while school lessons often paled in comparison to the vibrant world of his imagination, Juan discovered that every frame held a story waiting to be told. With a camera always tucked under his arm, he roamed his surroundings, fascinated by the power of imagery to immortalize the fleeting and the profound. This habit, born from youthful curiosity, eventually led him on a journey around the globe, working with diverse clients and capturing unique, meaningful moments—both candid and carefully orchestrated.
Juan’s work is a heartfelt tribute to the human spirit. Whether it’s a portrait of someone immersed in their passion, a dynamic advertising shot, or a campaign image that tells a story, his images breathe life into every subject. The influence of iconic photographers like Peter Lindbergh, Marc Lagrange, Annie Leibovitz, Helmut Newton, and Erwin Olaf is evident in his work—a blend of raw emotion and refined technique that speaks directly to the soul.
But Juan’s creative vision isn’t confined solely to the realms of photography and film. He finds inspiration in the elegance of modernist and minimalist architecture, drawing daily motivation from the pioneering designs of Le Corbusier and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. His creative journey is also harmonized by music—from the stirring anthems of U2, Coldplay, and The Boss to the soulful tunes of Pink, The War On Drugs, and New Order—each melody weaving its own unique thread into the fabric of his art. Even the sleek, enduring designs of Erwin Franz Komenda and Ferdinand Porsche from the automotive world have left their mark on his creative identity.
Life, as it does for all great storytellers, has also taught Juan about the bittersweet interplay of joy and loss, we lose people and welcome new life. These experiences have molded him into a resilient and passionate artist—someone who, although occasionally arriving with a hint of tardiness, is always worth the wait. His multicultural roots, being half Belgian on his father’s side and half Filipino/Chinese on his mother’s, enrich his perspective, while his role as the youngest of two brothers, a devoted father to J&A, and a loving husband to H, adds depth and warmth to his narrative.
Beyond the camera, Juan generously shares his expertise as a dedicated guest lecturer at The Narafi Luca School of Arts in Brussels. Here, he inspires budding creatives with his journey and insights, nurturing the next generation of artists who will one day tell their own stories through images and film.
Whether he’s dropping everything for a meal shared with good company, savoring a fine glass of wine over a beer, or traveling to far-off places for his work, Juan thrives on the connections he makes with people. Fluent in both English and Dutch, he values the intimacy of a phone call or a WhatsApp chat, though he believes nothing quite compares to the vibrancy of a face-to-face meeting.
Thank you for visiting his website. Juan eagerly looks forward to embarking on new creative adventures, developing beautiful concepts, and capturing those once-in-a-lifetime moments on photo or film that make our world so wonderfully unique.
